Workshop activity

In the class James ran a workshop activity of trailer deconstruction. Throughout this semester on top of our game prototypes and our development projects, we'll also be exploring game journalism. To help us understand  the concept we did watch a trailer deconstruction of bioshock infinite. Here is some of the analyses that I came up with.

*Note the sentences that are written in white are my lecturers, the writing in black will be my ananlysis.

The trailer opens with a girl with a noose around her neck suggesting that she is going to be hanged. I think the reason why its ambigious is because there are lot of unanswered questions, who is the sniper?, why do they have their gun on her?, what did she done in order to be executed?. This shot in particular uses some of the lens of inherent interest, because the ambiguity of the opening it could potentially parks the players interest.

Slide4.PNG

This shot depicts a man that appears to be religious, his left hand is pointing towards the girl which indicates that he is involved with the execution. How could he be involved? how I for see it is two alternatives, one, he is the executioner, two he is relgious man who is come to the execution so that that the girl can condess her last sins. Similary to first it continues using the lens of inherent interest.

Slide5.PNG

This is the first shot of the protagonist. The sniper has appeared in three shots now which suggests that weaponry will be key element in the games mechanics. This shot builds the lens of inherent interest, as there are still so many unanswered question, who is this guy?, who is he going to kill?

Slide6.PNG

This shot is a close up of the weapon, it shows the detail and rust of the weapon, the gold trimming suggests that the man takes a lot of pride of his weaponry, so he forged it with some gols. Or it could suggest that you can customised the look of your weapon. This shot is still using the lens of inherent interest but not in the same way as the previous shots, the previous shots used enigma to get the playes attention but in this shot it shows a weapon. This could appeal to a target audience that are interested in guns or first person shooter games.

Slide7.PNG

In the shot previous we saw a little bit of the world but it was quite blurry this is the first time we see the entirety of the game world, this shot is quite different than the previous shot because this onw uses the lens of beauty and projection, to make a good game there has to be something in  the game that makes it 'beautiful' and I think the game world makes it beautiful, with victorian - steampunk asthetic to it, the clouds  around the scene makes it looks

Slide8.PNG

This shot shows the first appearence of an enemy you might face in the game, because of the sudden charge scenery it expands the lens of inherent interest.

Slide9.PNG

This shot shows the character escaping the enemies attack, the bluryness of the perspective could show the speed of the game. Also the character jumping from one location to another suggests that you'll be moving a lot in the game .

Slide10.PNG

This shot shows are of the first mechanics that the player could use in the game.

Slide11.PNG

The trailer further shows the mechanic, the character appears to be manipulating the enemies, this shot and the shot periods are in first person this that the game will be in first person, also it could be a lens of projection, the plater could imagine themselves as the character fighting the enemies.

Slide13.PNG

These shots are one in the same, the one in the left shows the chaeacter shooting the enemy, the one in the right shows the reaction of the enemies death afterwards. The main character's face appeards to look very relieved, but the character on the left appears to be sad almost empathizing the loss of life, which could forshadow a subplot in the game.

The final shot shows more world building whilsting two lenses, lenses of projection and inherent interest.
