week 3

Artstic expression

Slide2.PNG

For this week we had two pieces of work from James, the first one was 'artistic expression', the task here is to choose one poem out of twelve and create a piece of art that can truly convey what we feel when reading our chosen dream. This could be conveyed via drawing, 3D model, a film, sculpture etc. But the constraints in this task is that there must be no written on our art piece. I felt the task was so vague, I almost felt overwhelmed. So what I did first was to break down the task into small chunks.

Here are steps of completing the task:

1. Write notes on all the poems

To visually imagine the artwork that I am going to create, I had to read the poem's first to get an understanding of what they were trying to convey. For the notes, I researched the poem and the analysis of it. I split the task into two days (six poems, each day), also within the notes I described what I could imagine when reading the pomes. E.g. in the poem 'still I rise' when read it I imagined a scene of rubble, destruction everywhere whilst the riots are still hot. After some thought I decided on using Dylan Thomas's 'do not go gentle into that good night' poem.

The story behind the poem was that Dylan's father was going blind and was dying, Dylan's poem was a retaliation of his father's soon to be demise, the poem was essentially a plea to his father, to fight death with persistence and stubbornness. The imagery that I had whilst reading the poem was this. Death (grim reaper) has come to claim a soul from a deceased body, but the soul is resisting, they're refusing to leave their body, so there is a struggle between death who is trying to snatch the soul, then you have the deceased soul who is too stubborn to leave because they feel that they have so much to live for. The imagery fascinated me so I decided to create that.

2. Designing the art piece

This is the final design of my artistic expression, its a biro piece that consists of cross-hatching as shading. It depicts death and a soul in a constant struggle because the soul is not going 'gentle' (resisting)  'into that good night' (heaven).

Feedback

After uploading the artwork James told us to guess which poem we drew inspiration from, here are my classmate's guesses:

Most of the guesses thought that the art piece was from one art, one of my classmates believed it was one art because of 'loosing and letting go'. Though I do like the interpretation I am a bit disappointed that none of them got the right answer, I suppose depicting death is a bit vague concept hence why the interpretations are so broad.

Assignment presentation

Another homework assignment that James asked us to do was to present a game that I like, the task was to take a snippet of a scene (or it could be a screenshot) from the game and you describe why this moment truly captures the entirety of the game. I found the exercise quite because I couldn't think of any games at the top of my head, until I thought of red dead 2.

Red dead redemption 2 is an action-adventure game that is set around in the wild west. I have been playing the game for the last 2 years, I chose red dead 2 mainly because there is so much to explore. The game itself is an open world, and in this game, there is so much to explore. As I said before I have been playing the game from the last two years and I'm still finding new objects.

What I decided, to talk about in the presentation was the theme of 'perception' and 'redemption'. At the start of the game dutch (the leader of the gang) may or may have not killed an innocent girl in a robbery, they never directly say this is true but there are instances where dutch's cruelty shows itself in full display. Arthur (the player) sees many of the atrocities that dutch commits and he questions 'who is this man who he has been loyal for years'. The player commits many crimes throughout the game where innocent people were caught in the crossfire. Though the game clearly points out that what you did was wrong, the player won't really grasp the scope of your actions until later in the game, and also later in the game dutch mental state becomes more and more unstable which fades your 'perception' of him. And I don't think that was a gret enough scene that conveyed this than the scene in guarma.

In this scene, it shows dutch killing an old lady after she threatens them to give them money. Though Arthur has seen many bad things that dutch has done, he is still loyal to him. It's not until this scene where he starts to think maybe Dutch isn't all he says he is. Throughout the rest of the game after this point, Arthur starts to question Dutch and himself and whether all the bad things he has done was all worth it. This leads to Arthur having to choose between two option, either take the road of destruction or the road of redemption. This was the scene that I decided to use for my presentation.

These are the clips that I used for the presentation for some reason video clips didn't on my premiere pro, so to rectify that problem I used clips instead. I put the clips in order for it make sense with everyone
